LASI 2027 at Occidental College — FAQ

Why is LASI moving to Occidental College?

After many years at Pitzer College, LASI is excited to return to Los Angeles and to Occidental College, where the Institute was previously held. Occidental offers a beautiful college campus, convenient access to Los Angeles, free campus parking, and a supportive music department. We look forward to making Oxy our new LASI home!

When will LASI take place at Occidental?

LASI 2027 will take place June 14th–18th, 2027. Teacher Workshop and Teen Dorm participants will arrive on Sunday, June 13th, with student programming beginning Monday, June 14th.

Will the schedule change because of the move?

The overall LASI schedule will remain essentially the same. Class times, group classes, recitals, and other programming will follow the familiar LASI format.

Where is Occidental College?

Occidental is located in Eagle Rock in northeast Los Angeles, approximately 15 minutes from downtown Pasadena and about 30 minutes from Arcadia, Monrovia, and East Pasadena, depending on traffic.

What are the dorm rooms like?

LASI students staying in the residence halls will stay in shared rooms with other LASI students. Rooms have air conditioning and access to shared/common spaces throughout the residence halls.

Are linens provided?

A partial linen package is provided, including a pillow and blanket. Students should bring their own Twin XL sheets and towels. Beds will not be made prior to arrival. If you tend to be cold, we recommend bringing an extra blanket.

Do the dorms have air conditioning?

Yes! The residence halls are air conditioned.

Are residence hall bathrooms private?

Bathrooms in the residence halls are communal/shared bathrooms. Students will share bathrooms with other students in their residence hall area.

Can parents or siblings stay in the dorms?

Yes! Families are welcome to stay in our family dorms. Find out more about room and board here.

Is breakfast included with dorm housing?

Yes, along with lunch and dinner.

Is parking available?

Yes! Free parking is available on campus. LASI families will receive information about where to park and any required permits before the Institute.

Is EV charging available?

Yes. Occidental has EV charging stations on campus, including visitor-accessible stations. Charging is available through ChargePoint and is subject to current campus policies and fees.

What airport should I fly into?

For those flying to LASI, Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) is the closest airport, approximately 15 miles from Occidental. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is approximately 25 miles away. Travel times can vary significantly depending on traffic.

Do I need a car?

A car is helpful but not necessarily required. Occidental is located in Eagle Rock, which has restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, and other amenities nearby. Families staying in nearby hotels may want a car for getting around Los Angeles.

Where can we eat near campus?

Eagle Rock has a wide variety of restaurants, cafés, bakeries, ice cream shops, and takeout options. You can find a list here.

Are there grocery stores nearby?

Yes. There are several grocery stores within a short drive of campus including Sprouts and Trader Joe’s.

Are there vegetarian/vegan/healthy options nearby?

Yes! Eagle Rock and neighboring areas have plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and health-conscious dining options. You can find recommendations in our local-area guide.
