Twinkler Frequently asked questions

My child has never played a violin before, can they attend this program?

Yes! This program is designed for beginners through the Twinkle Variations. Some students will have experience at a home studio, others will have just started. If this is your first time with the violin, expect to learn basic skills such as bow hold, left hand technique, and general setup. If your child is finishing Twinkle Theme at the time of registration, we may recommend moving up to the Foundational Program.

Does my child need a violin?

It depends. If your child is a total beginner then you will not need a violin. It is standard for Suzuki students to begin without an instrument. We assure parents that your child will still enjoy their experience, with or without an instrument to start. We hope by the end of the week that total beginners will be excited to continue their violin journey with a home teacher and return to LASI the following summer!

If you are already taking lessons we will work with whatever your home teacher has suggested. Many students with a home teacher will already be using a violin, in which case we would expect families to have a violin already. LASI will not be providing violin rentals during the week of institute, however we have vendors on site if you are interested in purchasing, but we recommend you do this with the guidance of a home teacher.

Do I need to attend with my child?

Yes, LASI is a family retreat. Parents will be studying the violin alongside their child. It is critical that parents attend institute with their child to experience all the benefits of studying Suzuki Method. Because campus is a college campus and classes are spread out, children must be supervised while on campus by an accompanying adult.

My child is beginning their violin studies at LASI, can you recommend a home teacher for them to continue lessons?

We recommend using the Find a Suzuki Teacher search tool on the Suzuki Association of the Americas website. You can search by Zip Code and also view each teacher’s qualifications and training. You may also reach out to our admin team with more questions.
